Project Manager and Lead Intern

In my role as Project Manager and Lead Intern, I oversaw the planning, coordination, and execution of a digital shift log system for the City of San Jose’s Emergency Operations Center. I led a small team of three interns, including myself, where I was responsible for delegating tasks, managing deadlines, facilitating team meetings, and ensuring our project aligned with stakeholder expectations and EOC operational needs.

The primary project I led was the development of a check-in/check-out and shift log system for EOC personnel. Working collaboratively with two peers and the IT department within the City of San Jose’s Emergency Operations Center, we designed and implemented a centralized platform that allowed staff to record shift activities, log critical updates, and track personnel movements. We built the system using Microsoft Power Apps integrated with SharePoint/Excel as the data backend, and included a QR code scanning feature for efficient check-in/check-out. Our solution aimed to replace paper logs and improve real-time visibility and accountability during emergency activations.

Key accomplishments included:

  • Gathering user requirements through interviews with EOC staff.

  • Designing a user-friendly interface suitable for staff with varying levels of tech proficiency.

  • Testing and refining the app to ensure reliability in high-pressure environments.

This internship experience directly enhanced my skills in project management, systems analysis, and application development—core areas of my Management Information Systems (MIS) major. I applied concepts in creating use-case diagrams, managing timelines with Gantt charts, and conducting stakeholder interviews. I also gained hands-on experience using Microsoft Power Platform, which many corporations heavily utilize Microsoft applications. Additionally, leading a team and working with a government agency helped strengthen my leadership, communication, and adaptability, which are skills essential for a future career in project management or IT consulting.
