How Might We Create a Greater Understanding of Systemic Racism?

How Might We Create a Greater Understanding of Systemic Racism?

This poster – a product of collaboration during a summer internship at Stanford University’s CESTA – illustrates our team’s thought process as we attempted to answer the question, How might we create a greater understanding of systemic racism (SR)?

We began by considering what SR means to us and how our identities are reflected in our experiences with SR. Next, we analyzed 4 data sets related to law enforcement agencies, the people fatally shot by police in California since 2015, places, and events of shootings. We came to the realization that statistically focused data is insufficient in creating a humanistic understanding of SR.

To solve this, we proposed further data gathering that is narrative-oriented. We want to capture the stories of the people affected by systemic racism. These stories could then be inserted into a “Q&A Bot”. The bot would reside on a platform visited by people interested in engaging with the topic of SR; It would provide an interactive and memorable experience and create a greater understanding of SR.
