Managing Someone Older Than You
When it comes to managing people, there are people who are older and may need to be managed. There are times we may not know what to do because of their age difference. In this LinkedIn Learning Module, I learned that it is important to always show respect to anyone in your group or who your manage despite their age. Moreover, it is ideal that we work together with our older employees and identify any missing gaps that you and your employee need. For example, the idea that every old person or “boomer” does not know how to use electronics. This idea is misconstrued into the fact that there are plenty of older people that know how to use a computer or software application. In any event that it may be true, instead of talking about it, give the opportunity to your employee and show them how to use the technology. In addition, supporting their ongoing performance will not only identify the missing gaps they need to succeed, it will allow them to understand what they are doing wrong, and what they need to do better. Someone who is not being coached to become a better employee will not be able to identify their missing gaps. Especially someone who is older than their supervisor, they may think that they are setting back the project / department, but will some assistance and support. Anyone in any age will succeed.
