Industry Guest Speaker: Lucas Laws

On October 27, 2022, I attended a live webinar that was organized by my professor, Raymond Sanchez. During the webinar, the guest speaker, Lucas Laws, talked about his experiences as a professional senior software engineer and gave us tips to be successful in the field. One of the things that he said that stood out to me was that system analysts don’t need to have extensive knowledge of the technology that they’re working with. It’s good if the analysts are knowledgeable, but it’s not required. System analysts should just know the basic fundamentals to communicate with people such as programmers or software engineers. System analysts are essentially the “filters” that assist programmers and software engineers to make their jobs easier. Analysts also figure out what is most important, or the highest priority, that the coders should focus on. Overall, I learned a lot from this webinar. It helped me get a better understanding of what a system analyst does which is very helpful for me since that was one of the careers that I had my eyes on after graduation. He also told me important programming languages that I should know in case I wanted a programming job, such as Java8, javascript, CSS, node.js, react.js, and express.js.
