Spartan Success Series

At 4pm on March 27th, I attended the Spartan Success Series event hosted by SJSU’s Associated Students located in ballroom b in the student union. There were many alumni there excited to give students advice and tell us about their experiences. There was one mentor  seated at each table who would talk to you about their careers and give you advice. The mentor that was seated at the table I was at was Manju Ramachandran and she told the students at the table how she studied computer science and engineering when she was in college. She then worked at Yahoo in charge of the cricket department. She was the only female there out of hundreds of men. After having children, she fell in love with them and did not think it was worth it to spend all her time with coding over being with children. She then switched careers and went into fundraising. She first worked with sports, but later on started working with SJSU. Other alumni that were there were also 1st generation graduates and some even failed out of college. I learned a lot of new interesting things at this event. Even though you may flunk out of school, doesn’t mean you can’t get a degree or a good job. They were able to get back on their feet and become very successful with good jobs. I also learned that it is never too late to change careers, and that you might enjoy the other one more than your current one. This relates to my career goals, because in the future I might also go through something similar to the alumni. I might want to change my career, or I might also become very successful like them.
