Effective Listening
1. What you learned and how it relates to your major (e.g., describe what you learned from this learning module).
The first main thing that the module teaches about listening is the five skills for improved listening. The five skills are recalling details, understanding the big picture, evaluating the content, attending to subtle cues, and empathizing with the speaker. These five skills are important to remember because many people are not aware of their bad habits while listening to another person. Poor posture or not empathizing with the speaker can make it seem that you don’t care about what they are talking about. On the contrary, doing things such as paraphrasing what they said and matching emotions with the speaker can reaffirm the speaker that you are listening to them and trying your best to empathize with what they are saying. Learning how to be a great listener is a critical thing to know in my major (MIS) because listening to your peers or boss properly can build a stronger relationship as well as build trust. If someone such as your boss is talking about an upcoming project, doing these effective listening behaviors will signal to your boss that you are a trustworthy employee and you are serious about your work.
