Learning Data Science: Ask Great Questions

1. What you learned and how it relates to your major (e.g., describe what you learned from this learning module).

From this learning module, I learned the importance of critical thinking and strategic questioning in the data analysis process. I gained a deeper understanding of how great discoveries in data science often start with asking the right questions—ones that challenge assumptions, clarify definitions, and uncover missing or misleading information. The module also taught me how to organize ideas into question trees and conduct effective team discussions that lead to better reasoning and decision-making. This directly relates to my Business Management and MIS (Management Information Systems) major because both fields rely heavily on data-driven decision-making. In business, asking the right questions helps identify customer needs, market trends, and performance gaps. In MIS, it ensures that data systems and analytics are used efficiently to produce accurate insights. Learning how to “pan for gold” in streams of data allows me to approach business challenges more thoughtfully—analyzing not just the numbers, but the reasoning and assumptions behind them.
